Well, I didn't accomplish much this weekend. I did get most (if not all) of the house cleaned. And I found that horse scratching post that I thought I ought to find when I saw Duke's face full of splinters yesterday, and I got it ordered.
If it actually works, I'll get another one or two - but first we'll put that one up on Duke's doorway where he seems to have been rubbing his face and neck and see if he'll use that instead of the wood!
Poor guy! But as raw as it looks, he still wants me to rub it for him. (At least that makes it possible to put ointment on there anyway.) |
Poor guy! I think he may itch because mosquitoes or gnats have bitten him on the nose. I spray him with bug spray regularly but I can't spray his face, of course, and I don't wash his face and put roll-on bug stuff or anything on there every day. When he drinks, he sticks his entire nose in the water and I hate to think of him rinsing that stuff off into his water bucket. So I'll get him that scratching post, but I need to figure out what the heck to do so he doesn't itch to begin with.
Lizzie seems to be feeling better, though. She doesn't stand around panting now (shorter hair is good), and she seems resigned to being confined to her paddock instead of being allowed out with "the boys."
That paddock - the largest of the three, actually - had been closed off after Ladybug died until Arthur arrived two weeks ago, so the grass in there is plentiful enough right now. That area does get pretty sunny at the end of the day, but Lizzie knows that she can be cooler in her stall then, so that isn't much of a problem.
As for Duke and Arthur, even though both of their paddocks are wide open to the main pasture, the two of them still stay in theirs most of the time as well. (Apparently Lizzie is an incredibly attractive girl!)
Well, I guess when they stop hanging out in there, I'll know Lizzie is out of heat and can be turned back out again. Let me know, guys!
