When I got up this morning I could barely walk, so I didn't even take Joey to therapy – getting him in there would have been too much of a challenge, but I got better as the day wore on.
Got some text messages from Mark’s sister from the ER in DC - more about that later. But by the time I headed home this evening I was actually feeling pretty decent - ready to start the weekend. As I pulled into the driveway, though, there was Rocky laying on the front porch by the door! What the heck? . . . When I left for work this morning he was out in our "escape-proof" back dog yard. I pulled up to the house and he got up and slooooowly walked down the steps and over to the truck. He looked exhausted and was walking all stiff - like he had just finished a marathon or something. Hmmm. We went in the house and he went straight to his bed. So I walked outside to see if I could figure out how he got out of the dog yard. It didn’t take long. In the area next to the gate from the dog yard into the back pasture, he had pulled loose the wire mesh that runs along the ground below the fence line to keep them from digging out and proceeded to dig under the chain link and wiggle out into the horse pasture.
Now, Rocky is the dog who always races up to the fence when he sees a horse and barks and snarls and throws himself against the fence.
A real tough guy, right? Well, if I had to guess, I’d bet that if he so much as growled at the horses while inside their pasture he would have had a LOT of running to do to stay out of Ladybug’s reach! I know she would have gone after him. And he probably got completely exhausted before he figured out how to get out of the pasture. He’s darned lucky he didn’t get stomped to death! But – on the plus side, he no longer barks and carries on at the horses!! Must have learned a significant lesson!
And the horses don't seem to pay the least bit of attention to the dogs either. Here they are casually waiting for dinner tonight, not noticing the dog yard at all.
Well -- whatever happened, the end result seems to be a horse/dog détent. Hey - that works for me.
As for the hole under the fence, there’s not a darned thing I can do about that. But maybe Buddy will be able to figure out some way to close it up tomorrow.
Right now, I’m going to go out and turn on the heated mattress pad on the sleeping porch and get ready for bed. I’ve always loved sleeping out there when it’s cool outside, but now that the horses are home it’s just wonderful. When I open my eyes, I can look over and see Duke standing in his stall sleeping, too. Guess it’s not very visible in this picture, but there he is.

Okay. Time to go. Maybe if I get plenty of rest I can accomplish SOMETHING tomorrow. We'll see.
