Joey was doing SO well after his surgery. He's been walking on that leg almost all the time already. I had cut back his pain meds from 3 pills to 2 and he wasn't complaining. THEN I took him out to go to the bathroom this afternoon.
Yikes! Scared me to death! So I ran in and called LSU and they said bring him right in so they could examine him. Once they finished (almost 2 HOURS later -- they had a car accident dog to deal with in the meantime) they said it was probably a reaction to the Rimidyl, so they took him off of that and gave me another drug that provides a coating to the stomach and intestines that he gets one hour before eating for as long as he's on medications. I also have to give him a 20 mg. Pepcid each time he gets his pain meds.
On the plus side, though, they also gave me 2 cans of Purina EN (gastroenteric veterinary dog food) and he absolutely LOVES that stuff! He loves it SO much that I can just stick all the other pills in there including those bitter pain meds and he scarfs it all down without giving it a thought. Hey - probably made the whole wasted afternoon worth the trouble.
But it was so late when I got home that by the time I finished feeding Joey (he HAD to eat within an hour after they gave him the first dose of that new medicine while we were there) I had to feed the horses in the dark tonight. A challenge but, it turns out, not impossible.
So now that everyone else has eaten and gone to sleep, well . . . me too. I'm sure I'll be up bright and early tomorrow.
Well -- early anyway, if not bright.
