Wasted weekend

I had enough overtime this past week that I planned to leave work early Friday and run Boo out to the vet to see why he's no longer able to race up and down the stairs -- something he has loved to do from the time we adopted him.  A few weeks ago, he got to where he would go up just fine, but then when he wanted to come back down he would run back and forth at the top, looking like he was trying to convince himself that he COULD go down the stairs.  Then once he started down he'd go faster and faster and faster until he looked like he was about to just slide the rest of the way down.  It was really frightening to watch.  So we've put up a gate so he can't go up there anymore.  Now we need to see what the problem is.

But that plan was trashed.  LSU put off a decision about whether to file an international application whose deadline was Saturday until noon on Friday!  They were planing to file ONLY if the patent was licensed (so the licensee would pay for it) and they didn't reach an agreement with them until then.  So . . . by the time I got it filed I ended up with still more overtime but NOT enough time to get to the vet.  Oh well -- another day.   Sorry, Boo.

I was hoping Buddy and Lisa would come by today but I haven't heard from them.  Hope Lisa is okay.  They didn't make it over last weekend because they were at the emergency room, but she called earlier in the week and was fine then.  Hope that's still the case.

But - whether they get here or not, I'm going to clean up Duke tomorrow, that's for sure!  The guy is a serious MESS.  He usually doesn't do anything so stupid, but since it's been raining all week, he's apparently gone out and rolled in the mud more than once because now that's he's dry, the guy feels like cardboard!  Yuk.  And his mane is not just dirty, but solid mud.  No brushing THAT out.  Oh, well -- I'll get him cross-tied and try and clean him up in the morning before it starts to rain again.  (It's supposed to rain every day for the rest of the whole next week.)

Oh - and Joey's skin is a disaster AGAIN.   He could stand to be bathed in his medicated shampoo.  But he's probably  still going to need to go back to the dermatologist over at LSU again.  $$$$$$$

Well - at least the cats are doing well.  We sprayed the porch for fleas and treated both of them.  Then we switched them to Science Diet cat food.  I don't know exactly which process did the trick, but Abigail had been covered with scabs and her hair was thinning and I was planning to take her back to the vet for her cortisone treatment -- something she had to have for some sort of skin allergies at least once a year.  But now?  Her skin has cleared up and her hair is growing back and she seems perfectly happy for a change!  Excellent!   So glad she isn't going to have to be on cortisone again.  Regular treatment is NOT good for them.

Next we're going to try and make it more comfortable for them out there on that porch.  It's hot, hot, HOT on that porch in summer.  Mark set up a big fan before he left and both of them seem to love laying in front of that fan on their bed.  I ordered a huge hundred-foot roll of UV blocking shadecloth yesterday.  We're going to install grommets along the edge of it and then hang it over the screened windows back there for the summer.  That porch faces west so it get SUPER hot in the afternoon.  But that shadecloth is supposed to let a breeze come through while cutting 90% of UV rays, keeping the temperature a good 20+ degrees lower.  Sure hope that's true!  But it can't hurt to see.  That extra layer will probably also cut back on the rain blowing in there during rain storms, as well.

Got a package in the mail today that was supposed to be a new set of reins.  The receipt inside confirmed that, but the actual contents? . . . A HUGE neoprene breast collar instead -- now THERE's something I have NO earthly use for.  Sigh.

When I talked to Zoilo today he said Arthur is doing GREAT.  He rode him with another horse and they had the other horse speed away.  Arthur didn't give him a minute's problem trying to follow that horse.  I was worried that he might so I'm really happy to hear that!  I'll tell you what, I am more and more anxious to bring the boy home!  Can't wait to be able ride him regularly.  I hope when crawfish season finally ends Buddy and Lisa will have time again to ride Duke and Lizzie along with Arthur and me.  Mark says he wants to get back to riding Duke, so it would be good to have Buddy ride him for a while and get him back in the groove.

Well - lots of things to look forward to.  But right now? . . . I think I'll go get dinner for me and all the critters.
