Fence update

We kept an eye on the horses for hours after that fence charger was installed Saturday to be sure they wouldn't freak when they found out it was hot, but -- nothing.  Both of them hung out all day Saturday AND Sunday in the front part of the pasture where the fence is those 5" wide strips that are not electrified.  Hmmm.  Did they KNOW the other fence was "hot"?  I really wanted to see them go close to that fence so I could be sure neither of them would be so frightened that they might race off and run through it at some other point.  But I finally just stopped worrying about it since they seemed to be completely ignoring it.   Okay.  It got electrified on Saturday afternoon.  Well, in the middle of the night on Sunday night I woke up to the sound of thundering hooves!  Talk about LOUD!  Duke came FLYING into his paddock and straight into his stall where he stood snorting for a good ten minutes.  Now, I can't be certain, but it sure seems like he waited until the middle of the night, then went back there to check out that fence.  Sneaky boy.  Well, at least he heads for his stall when he's shocked and doesn't try and head down the road!

But that was the only time that happened.  And I haven't seen him trying to eat the grass outside the fence a single time since then.

As for Lizzie -- she's NEVER gone near the fence - even before it was charged.  So maybe she's been around a hot wire in the past.  But she certainly seems to know perfectly well not to touch one.  She does, however, go stand staring out the gate leading out of her paddock into the front yard a LOT.  Hope she isn't able to communicate to Duke her desire to go out there!  The wire fencing around HER paddock is NOT charged (the space is too small for that), so he could let her out if he wanted to.  I would have thought it was ridiculous to worry about something like that at one point.  Now?  Hey - anything is possible when it comes to Duke!
