Jerry has been here clearing out the paddocks and pasture areas this weekend but, as usual, there will still be things to do before the horses can actually live there. This is the paddock attached to Bug's stall.
That area under the tree on the left was piled with trash and old dead branches from a willow tree that was demolished during a storm. All that has been cleared away now. But check out the ground in the entire paddock -- it's going to need dirt hauled in. That space where that tree was taken out needs to be filled in, and we will need to raise the level of the entire paddocks so they will drain well, even during heavy rains.
Not to mention clearing out the other side of the fence. . . again. It's only been a few months since they cleared a path about 10 feet wide over there so we could ride around the perimeter of the property. But this IS Louisiana -- you can see that the weeds and vines have grown back despite the drought and now need to be bush hogged AGAIN. We keep thinking we're doing things now in such a way that they will be less work down the road. But I'm not sure that's really possible in the end. Wonder if we will be able to afford to have someone else keep all this up to date 10 or 15 years from now? Hmm. But I'm not going to worry about that part now. I just want to get the horses home BEFORE that time!!! (Mark started building the barn about 4 years ago and they're still not home. Sigh.)
If I could have anything at all I wished for, I'd wish Wendy lived down here with a "horse person" husband instead of in Ohio, and that they would move into this house one day and let us live in a little cottage nearby and enjoy their company AND the horses without the work! But since I guess that's not going to happen, we better plan to stay in good shape 'til we're in our 90's! (You hear that, Mark?)
