Although Baton Rouge proper is a little more than a quarter million people, and "greater Baton Rouge" is more like three-quarters of a million, the place just feels like a small town, particularly if you have ever lived in a "real" city somewhere. Anyway, yesterday afternoon at work I got a tremendous headache, so I decided to knock off early and go get a massage at a place near my downtown office. I had never been there before so I didn't ask for anyone in particular. The guy I got was absolutely amazing so I was telling him that I would definitely like to come back for another treatment from him again sometime. At that point, he began to tell me that he would be moving to North Carolina a month from now because his wife had gotten a veterinary residency there. I asked who his wife is and it turns out she is a vet student who came to Al's place with our old LSU vet on a farm call a year or so back, and she is also a friend of Torri's, the girl who boards her horses with ours and works at the vet school. Seems like that sort of thing happens around here ALL the time. I don't know if it's because it really IS a small town, despite its population, or because it's the South and so people are always asking about your family and where you live and who you know until they DO come up with some sort of connection. Whichever it is, it makes this place feel more like home than I've felt anywhere else I've ever lived. Which is a problem. Mark and I keep talking about buying a place in Ohio or Kentucky when we retire in a few years so we can be closer to the rest of my remaining family. And while that's something I would really love, it would be VERY hard to leave this place.
Decisions, decisions . . .
