Visiting with friends and thinking about dogs

Enjoyed the day at Janet and Mike's place.  I had hoped to take a bunch of photos while I was over there since it was such a gorgeous sunny day.  But I only got a couple pictures before the camera battery gave up the ghost.  Good grief !  I have two batteries for the thing.  The screen actually shows how many (or how few, in this case!) minutes are left on the battery.  So how could I have ended up with a dead battery?!  Well -- I forgot to take along the extra one and I didn't notice that the one in the camera said it was running low.  As Mark says,  "It's going to be a long old age."  Sigh.

Well, I did at least get a couple pictures of their Great Pyrenees, Betty.  She is exactly like her pictures look -- very serious, very business-like, very stand-offish with visitors.  But she takes excellent care of the livestock and is extremely protective of Janet.

A wonderful dog.  Makes me think about how much I miss Bruce Lee, our Rottweiler who died earlier this year.  Although we still have four dogs left, two of whom are pretty protective, they're just not the same as having a Rottweiler patrolling the place.  Other people just aren't as impressed by them.

I saw a dog on PetFinder a couple weeks back, and if our older dogs were gone I would have gone to get him immediately.  He'd have been the perfect dog ... smaller than a Rottie so I could manage to lift him into the car in an emergency, but impressive enough that no one would mess with him.
I'd like another larger dog before the last of our old dogs is gone.  It's so hard to lose a dog anytime, but I can't imagine how awful it would be to lose a LAST dog.  Besides, our only young dog right now is Rocky.  If he were our only dog I would definitely feel waaaaay too vulnerable.  NO ONE is the least bit intimidated by Rocky.  Hey -- look at that face .... who would be?  He is SUCH a sweet boy!
