Hard to say HOW to define this weekend! . . . but it seems to be turning out alright after all --

On Saturday, Jackie's foster dad brought him up to us and I absolutely adored him!  He was even more amazingly gorgeous than he looked in his pictures!  Here are some more pictures I took:

Here he is watching Sam drive away.  He's obviously unhappy about that.
He's still looking out after a few more minutes . . .  maybe he's hoping Sam will be coming back.
But eventually he quit looking out and began to hang out with me all the time.  Isn't he beautiful!

He's a really nice size, too.  I think Sam said he's currently 118 lbs.
And we got along just great from the very beginning.   He loved sitting right next to me wherever I was.

He even insisted on sitting on the bed next to me for a while there!

We were both sitting on the chaise when the problem with Mark happened.

Mark took this picture before he went upstairs to his office for a couple hours.
Looking at that picture now, Jackie looks a little suspicious of Mark, doesn't he?  I didn't realize that then.  But a couple hours later when Mark came back downstairs, we were still sitting there - I was playing with my Kindle and watching TV and petting him with my other hand off and on and he seemed perfectly happy.  But . . .

When Mark came down the stairs and leaned forward to open that white gate there at the bottom of the stairs, Jackie leaped off the chaise, raced across the room and bit his hand.  Fortunately, Mark yanked it back at the same time, so Jack just barely got hold of it, but the sad part was that there was NO indication that he was going to do that.  If he had growled or something, I would have grabbed his collar.  (There is no way he would have hurt me.)  But since he didn't growl or anything, it was entirely unpredictable.

So I had to ask them to take him back.  I can't tell you how bad I feel about not being able to keep him.  But there is no way I can justify keeping him if Mark has any problem with him whatsoever.

So . . . yesterday they came and picked him up and were planning to bring Bettie (the female Cane Corso they have) up Monday afternoon.  She is apparently MUCH more laid back.  She gets along well with all other dogs and is fine with everyone, I'm told.  Sure hope so.  Anyway, when they hadn't shown up by 5 PM, I gave Michael a call and he said he couldn't contact Bettie's foster mom so it would have to be one evening this week or maybe Saturday.  That's fine, I guess.

But I'm still going to miss Jackie.

Fortunately, right after they came and picked up Jackie, Mark had planned to head out to Jan's birthday party.  And as it turned out, it was a really great afternoon.  I'm lucky it happened when it did because I wasn't nearly as upset about losing Jackie after spending the afternoon and evening over there.  It was especially nice that everyone there was both a dog and horse person!

Kristina and Hilton (they brought that wonderful cake!)

Isn't this an amazing cake!
Kristina said she got it at Whole Foods.   I'd love to get one for us.
We have no pending birthday but who cares! . . . I just want one of those cakes!

Kristina, Janet and Juliette

Jan was obviously having a lot of fun, too!

Getting ready to blow out the candles . . .

Janet and Mark -- and look at all that snack FOOD! . . .
(You should have SEEN the actual dinner!)
Anyway, although they planned to bring Bettie up - Monday it didn't happen.  Jan and Mike came down to check her out with us, so instead we all went out to eat over at Louisiana Bayou Bistro.  A totally FINE weekend after all.

And Jerry was installing insulators on the front 4-panel horse fence.  We're planning to add two electric fence wires that will both keep the dogs inside the front yard AND keep the horses from sticking their heads through the fence to eat grass on the other side.  When they do that, it stretches out the fence strips and Mark has to tighten them back up periodically over and over again.  "Electric is good."

Actually, we're going to have to set up a second electric fence around the flower beds there by the porch and in the raised beds by the barn to keep the horses from eating THEM as well before they can be allowed back out in front.  It's not just that they shouldn't remove the flowers -- some of them are actually considered poison to horses!    But once the electric strips are installed, the dogs will be able to go play out there in the front yard whenever I'm home and the driveway gate is closed and locked.

There will be an electric wire installed at the bottom edge of that bottom strip, and a second wire up behind the top of the second strip up.  Those wide strips run along the FRONT of those posts, and the wires will be installed on the BACK of those posts so the wires will be sticking out a good 6 inches further into the yard.  That should keep all the animals completely away from the fence.  If those locations don't do it for the horses, we'll just have to add a third wire there along the very top of the fence posts.   (That would deal with "people" as well, I think!)  We'll see if that's necessary.
