Heard a super-loud "SNAP" from the back of the property while I was out in the barn feeding the horses yesterday morning, but I was running late and didn't have time to go investigate. When I went to check when I got home, it turned out the snap was the sound of a HUGE limb breaking off of one of those tall skinny trees in the back pasture. I guess I should have checked at the time, because the thing only missed landing on the fence by about six inches! Could have been a problem. The branch was completely live, so maybe it got hit by lightning during the storm the other night. That storm didn't last long at all, but there was a LOT of thunder and lightning, so maybe . . .
As I said to Mark, it would be really nice if we could find someone with one of those tall basket things like the utility company uses to trim trees who could come and "top" ALL the trees back there. They're all super tall (maybe 75 to 100 feet) and super skinny.
So taking the tops off would still leave them a good 40 feet tall. They'd be a lot safer and it would encourage them to spread out wider and look more attractive over time. I guess tree trimmers would be significantly less expensive now than they were after Katrina and Gustaf (the only times we've used one), but it probably still wouldn't be cheap so I guess we better pay off Joey's surgery before we move on to tree trimming. (Always SOMETHING, huh?)
