Found a really terrific round bale holder -- I've never seen anything like it locally, or even online, before. It's called a HayHut . It's the only feeder I've seen where I see absolutely no danger of a horse getting a leg injured in it. Now I just need to figure out how to get one since there are no distributors anywhere in Louisiana. (Looks like we may be visiting Houston -- there are two dealers over there.)
I was thinking we'd put a round bale under that big vinyl shelter we have, but with the HayHut we wouldn't even need the shelter. That could be used then for mowers and carts and things instead. The HayHut is also light enough that we could move it anywhere we wanted it, which would be great since we plan to rotate pastures. According to the reviews I've read, it even makes it possible for all horses to eat from one bale and not run each other off. That would be nice. (We'll see if it works for Bug.)
But the really cool thing is that it will pay for itself over one winter in savings on hay! When Joey delivered hay last week we asked if he also had round bales. Well, not only does he have round bales, the cost is only $45 each. That may SOUND like a lot, but one round bale contains the same amount of hay as 20 square ones! . . . at $6 each. So that $45 gets you the equivalent of $120 in square bales! Now THAT's a deal!
