"Mule response" number one . . .

I  e-mailed our horse vet, Anna Chapman, this morning to see if she knew anyone with a mule, and she just gave me a call.  She said there is another doctor who actually lives very nearby who has a mule!  She's going to give her a call and see if she'd mind talking with me about it.  I hope she will.  That would be great!

While we were on the phone, she also told me that she has NEVER treated a mule for colic!   OMG!  That is one huge deal to me.  I can't stand the thought of losing another horse to colic like I did Ladybug.  That was so totally devastating.  So the idea that a mule doesn't often colic? . . . that alone is about enough of a reason for me to get a mule instead of a horse.

Anna did say, though, that mules do have some problems that are specific to them, such as lung worms and fat on their liver.   We didn't take the time to talk about what might cause those things or what might need to be done to prevent them.  If I ever do actually decide to buy a mule, she will be examining it so we can talk about those specifics then.  (And I'll be looking those things up online in the meantime!)

And I'll be carrying my cell phone with me everywhere now in hopes that I'll be getting more calls after all those notes I've posted.  We'll see.
