Well, they have opened the first gate on the Morganza Spillway. One out of 125 gates. They're opening only one gate today and that seemed insignificant to me when I first heard it, but after seeing this video I don't feel that way anymore. That one gate diverts 75,000 gallons per SECOND away from the Mississippi. Per SECOND! That's going to bring the level up in the spillway a lot faster than I imagined.
And a large portion of the Morganza Spillway is a wildlife refuge. If they want to give the wildlife in that "refuge" time to escape from the water, it needs to come up slowly. I feel at least as bad for those animals as for the people. The people have had weeks to prepare but those poor animals are going to be in shock. And once you see the video, the flow from that one gate doesn't seem the least bit minor anymore.
