Well, Mark took up the bathroom floor this morning. The good news is that it's only the floor that's rotted - not the joists or anything under the plywood. The bad news, however, is that there appears to be a water leak somewhere other than the shower because there is still water dripping off the joists, even though we haven't used the shower in there in over two weeks. So it will be a matter of locating where that water is coming from. Mark's going to have to take out the vanity and toilet and take up the entire floor, then maybe remove the sheet rock from the side wall -- which is where the plumbing and drain pipes run up past his bathroom to the two bathrooms on the second floor. I was afraid we would also have to take down the wall between his bath and our bedroom, but at least it doesn't look like that will be necessary. We'll see.
We had the fencing materials delivered to the hardware store across the highway from here since there not enough space here for one of those giant semis to turn around here, and since a fork lift was necessary to offload the more than 3/4 of a ton of materials! Anyway, the hardware store delivered the stuff over here to us today, so now we're ready to get started on the fencing as soon as the weather straightens out. Yippee!
As for Ladybug and her ear abscess, I finally gave up on waiting for Dr. Chapman from LSU to get back to me and called Kleinpeter Equine and got Heather Garcia to come out and look at her. She's a VERY nice doctor. Very gentle and kind to the horses. And Bug was SO good. She let her stick that scope in her ear and squeeze and poke and examine the thing without putting up the least struggle. Guess she's really gotten used to having it fooled with over the last few weeks.
When I talked to Dr. Heather on the phone, she thought it might be what she called an ear tooth (dentigerous cyst), which, after I did some online research, seemed pretty unlikely to me, given Bug's age (20+ years). And sure enough, when she got here, she said when I told her it was at the base of her ear, she thought I meant along the side of her face below her ear, not at the base of her ear INSIDE her ear, so the x-ray she planned to do wasn't necessary after all. She said it appeared to be a long-time condition that has recently come out, and that there's really nothing that can be done about it other than keeping it clean until it closes up because most of that egg-sized lump is scar tissue and not part of the abscess. I wasn't pleased to hear that, but at least it isn't hurting her. She said as long as we keep it cleaned twice a day until it closes up so that it doesn't get infected, the worst that could happen is that she might lose the hearing in that ear. But that's okay. Things could be a lot worse.
So, all things considered, although we have a lot to do, nothing is really terrible. That's good enough for me.
