Wow. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but what I saw when I got over to the barn tonight definitely wasn't it! I thought when the vet told me she had put a tube in Bug's ear that it would be the kind they put in humans - like a feeding tube or something. And that the saline solution would be injected INTO the tube, then we would gently press the ear to expel the solution. Ha. Not EVEN.
What the vet did was cut a second hole about an inch over from the hole where the abscess had originally ruptured, then threaded a piece of rubber tubing through the two holes and tied the ends together like a giant pierced earring or something. The tubing is just there to keep the two holes in Bug's ear open, it's NOT where the saline solution goes at all. The saline gets injected into one of the holes next to the tubing and it just squirts out the other hole -- and onto me, today, as it turned out. Yuk. Talk about a disgusting smell! Mark says he will do the rinsing by himself tomorrow. (Thank you, dear!) He's going to put her in the wash rack, then stand outside the rack on her right side, put his left arm around her shoulder and hold her head up against his shoulder and inject the saline solution into her ear with his right hand. Wow. It's GOOD to have a REALLY sturdy 6'4" husband!
Should be a lot better for Bug, too, than what she went through today. I thought the vet sedated her, but she just used a twitch on the poor baby while she worked on the ear. I'm sure what Mark means to do will be a lot less painful for her.
Bug is also getting 8 crushed antibiotic pills with each meal. So I'm hoping that the saline solution flush will only be necessary for a few days. I hope, I hope, I hope!
