I'm at work (well -- at lunch) and Joyce is cleaning up the house again as we speak. I'm really looking forward to going home to a clean house, once again.
I stopped by Curves last evening. But despite the fact that there is a Curves very close to the house, that place is definitely NOT for me. Couldn't believe the setup. They have about 10 machines arranged in a big circle and you sit down on one and do whatever it is it does for . . . you ready for this? . . . 30 SECONDS (??!!). Then a voice comes over the intercom telling you to move on to the next station - which is just a square platform where you do various movements like running in place or whatever for the next 30 seconds, followed by 30 more seconds on the next machine, 30 seconds on another platform, next machine, etc. etc.. That's just NUTS!

There is no way to adjust the machines for more or less resistance. so except for doing the exercises faster, there is no way to really increase your effort. And in 30 seconds, what the heck are you going to accomplish??? I went through the entire workout and today -- despite the fact that I haven't been to a health club in 14 YEARS -- I'm not even a little bit sore anywhere. Obviously, that place is not what I need to increase my strength for riding.
Next on the list -- Woman's Wellness Center, affiliated with Women's Hospital here in Baton Rouge. Unfortunately, they are much farther away from us, but they have absolutely everything: a huge gym, various exercise and yoga classes, swimming pools, pilates machines, personal trainers -- even a spa complete with various types of massage, facials, hair and nail care, even a separate sauna and whirlpool. Absolutely everything you could ever imagine including a quarterly personal analysis by medical professionals. They even advertise that the staff are all trained in cardio resuscitation and automated defibrillation! Eeek! Hope the workouts aren't THAT intense! Anyway, I plan to go check THEM out tonight or tomorrow night.
I think I'd also like to take a look at a local "Y" and a non-chain fitness center at Ketcham, too. I'll keep you posted.
