Lizzie scared me to death this morning. I normally feed the horses very early, then I go out right before I leave for work and open up Lizzie's paddock gate so she can join Duke in the back pasture (he rarely gets locked in because he comes in on his own if it rains). And she usually runs right up and follows me to the gate so she can dart out the moment it's opened.
Well, this morning when I got out there Lizzie was laying down in the sand just outside her stall. Okay. I'm sure sand is comfy to lay down on. But when I walked up to her she didn't jump up. She let me kneel next to her and pet her and talk to her. That is NOT Lizzie normally! So I was afraid she was colicing AGAIN!
I went over and opened the gate just to see if she would get up and go out. Well, when she saw Duke out there she did get up -- she was apparently afraid he would be coming in after her. But then she just stood there just outside her gate, not grazing. So I ran back inside to get my phone so I could call the vet, but when I got back outside she had gone on out and was back there grazing. Whew!
I'm still a bit concerned, though. When I checked her feed buckets she hadn't finished her feed or her alfalfa pellets. So I think I'll leave work a little early and go make sure she's okay while there's still time to call the vet before 5 if I need to.
I'll tell you what, losing Bug has made me a nervous wreck anytime I see them lay down! And when they don't jump up when I come over to them . . . At one time that would have made me very happy -- to be able to sit next to them and pet them and talk to them. Now? . . . it just scares me.
