Heard a sudden loud thumping early this morning at something like 4:30 or 5 AM while I was sleeping out on the sleeping porch. Sat bolt upright in bed! I was afraid at first that a huge wild dog had come in through that dog door out there that makes a noise when a big dog crashes through it. But then I actually woke up and realized that with 6-foot chain link around the whole back that was highly unlikely.
And besides - the sound kept on. Listening, I could hear that it was coming from the direction of Duke's paddock. Now, when he finishes eating, he DOES pull his feed bucket off the wall bracket and throw it on the ground. And what I was hearing DID sound something like his bucket hitting the wall or the door frame -- except that this sound was way more continuous. What the heck!?
I walked outside then, and what do you know . . . Duke had taken the manure cart that we park under his covered porch and was pulling the thing around his paddock! Too funny! When it's empty and you push it over rough ground, the wheels make a very loud rattling noise. And he was lifting it off the ground and throwing it back down occasionally, too. THAT made a REALLY loud noise! Good grief!
The boy is NOT dumb. He knows that if he makes a lot of noise to complain I'll come out there and give him more hay. Apparently he thought it was easier to just haul that cart around to make a racket than to kick at the chain link fence or call out to me. Well, he's going to have to rethink things yet again, because I'm definitely moving that cart OUT of his paddock from now on!
