Well, for the second time, Dr. Chapman didn't show up as scheduled to see our horses yesterday. When I called back over to LSU, they said they couldn't reach her for some reason so I was considering calling Kleinpeter. Well, about 6 or 7 last night she finally called. Seems they have a new person in the office who has been scheduling her appointments on the wrong sheet and she hasn't known about them. So we went over on the phone the things I wanted to ask her about, then I decided to put off her actual visit until next month so she can do the blood tests on Lizzie that wouldn't be valid at the moment.
When we talked about whether it would be safe to try riding Lizzie again after that overheating issue the other day, she said to try shaving her in the areas that can be covered by a blanket - back, chest, along the veins in the neck - then lunge her regularly for a week or so to see if she has any sort of reaction before actually riding her again. Because she is (we believe) a Cushings horse, her super-heavy winter hair came in suddenly over a period of only about a week, so although that never would have occurred to me, I guess it IS possible that when she had what looked like a heat stroke during that cold spell the week before last, it might have been because she was suddenly so much more "insulated." The lunging should not only be a test for her, but also a good way to get her back into decent condition gradually, as well, so it's probably a really good idea. And I can actually DO it at this point. I still have problems with one leg, but my back feels relatively normal so, we'll give it a shot.
When I left work today, I went by and picked up Mark over at the car place he likes after he dropped off the station wagon. The thing is going to need a major overhaul and four new tires. So much for this month's contribution to our retirement fund! But at least it did happen "this" month and not in one of the months when we had dog surgery costs or horse expenses or personal medical costs, anyway. Guess we should be grateful for that, at least.
I WAS going to go over to Wal-Mart after I picked Mark up and find some giant plastic storage containers so that this weekend Lisa and I would be able to sort out all the horse stuff I have stashed absolutely EVERYWHERE in this house (and garage . . . and screened porch . . . and truck trunk . . . ) and stick it all into those containers. Then we can put most of those out in the barn, now that it's cleared out. I even want to put all the saddles into containers so that they are NOT accessible to Boo any longer! I am SO disappointed in him. Here I thought he was the perfect dog -- right up until he ate the leather cover off the cinch on Ladybug's saddle and the entire cinch strap itself off of Duke's saddle! I never realized what he had done until Buddy got ready to saddle everyone up that weekend . . . oops! Fortunately, I did have a nylon cinch strap we could use instead, but it definitely doesn't look quite right on that big leather saddle, that's for sure.
But I digress . . . I want to put every last horse article into a nice LABELED container so I can actually find anything I need when I need it. I am constantly coming across things that I needed before but couldn't find at the time. That has GOT to stop. But I think I'm going to put off that Wal-Mart trip until tomorrow.
Oh - and I hope I'm going to clear out that upstairs bedroom this week as well! Got an e-mail from a local bargain group online from someone looking for clothing for a friend who had run away from an abusive relationship taking nothing at all with her. Turns out the clothes and shoes she needs are BOTH exactly my size! Sounds like I need to be just where I am for her, doesn't it? So she gets clothes -- and I get the use of an extra bedroom back! I'm really looking forward to handing over as much as I can manage to her. This has to be an incredibly sad, frightening time in her life. I really hope she manages to find herself a really happy, contented, SAFE relationship down the road. (I can assure her that it's possible -- even I have managed it!)
Okay. Time to get busy and get Mark's tires ordered from TireRack.com. Hope they can get them here before he has to head back to work. We can't find the ones he wants locally at the moment, so . . .
